Update on New Beginning Academy progress

We are pleased to report that the New Beginning Academy (NBA) in Juja Farm, Kenya got off to a great start to the new school year on 3 January 2012 and the children were very excited to return following the Christmas break.

We are also very excited tp receive an excellent report from the District Education Department complimenting us in every area of our work and on the excellent performance and achievements of the school children attending NBA.

The work on the extension for the additional classrooms for the school is going very well but we still greatly need and appreciate your valuable support to enable us to complete this work Once this is finished it will enable the children who are ready to continue with their development and to progress through the educational system.

Once again may I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and as always we would really appreciate you helping us to spread the word about our charity to your family and friends.

Crafts and Cards Fair at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on 1 March 2012

We will be holding a Crafts and Cards fair outside the staff dining room at the Maelor Hospital between 11.30 am - 2.00 pm on Thursday, 1 March 2012.

There will be a variety of African Handmade Crafts,

Bags and Sandals at very reasonable prices!!!

Along with Birthday, Wedding, Special Occasions and General cards.

Our mission is to help to alleviate poverty and prejudice

by providing practical services to the poor and those

suffering from HIV/Aids in Kenya and

Wales

particularly women and children.

Please come along and support us and find out about

ways and opportunities, in which you could

become involved, to help us to help needy children.

Glyndwr University Volunteer Recruitment Event

GlobalGiving Challenge Update

GREAT NEWS

Thanks to our faithful supporters we hope to have met our challenge before the deadline, as we break the 50 unique donor barrier with £2,237 being raised to date.

What an excellent start this will give us for the coming New Year, we can't thank you enough.

Not only have you helped us to raise such a huge sum of money that will enable us to complete the next stage of our building project, but thanks to your generosity we will also be guaranteed a permanent place on the GlobalGiving.co.uk website. This will afford us much greater exposure in the world of fundraising as, in addition to individual donors, many corporate businesses also use this website when seeking worthy causes to support.

We still have until midnight on Thursday 22 December to maximise the funds raised and we will let you know the final figure following the deadline.

But for now, on behalf of the women and children that we serve we give you our heartfelt thanks and wish you all a very Blessed Christmas and prosperous New Year.

I must start with an enormous ‘Thank You’ to you all!

Through your continuous support and commitment we have achieved a great deal throughout the year 2010 – “Together We Are Making A Difference’’

2010 has gone like a gushing wind! Great and exciting things were happening throughout the year and I would like to take this opportunity in the form of a newsletter to update you on the Charities’ progress.

We have had some fantastic achievements and I am hoping that this edition will greatly encourage you, as you see what we have been able to achieve through the amazing momentum of your ever-valuable support! Please take a break, read and Enjoy!

Feeding programs

Facts

More than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day, 300 million are children. (global stats: UNAIDS)

33% of the African population – suffer from malnutrition.

We are pleased to say our feeding programme has continued to grow and with the help of this initiative we have been able to encourage more local families to participate in the "extended family initiative". Despite their willingness, most families would find it impossible to participate without some assistance, as they struggle to sustain their own family needs but through our support it makes it possible for them to provide a warm and loving family environment for our orphaned children to grow up in.

Education:

Facts

Over 300 million children around the world do not have access to education and most likely will never learn to read or write. BKF believes that all children, regardless of gender or background, have a right to education. By empowering children through this lifelong gift, we see a world in which people are able to realize their full potential.

Did you know that, only 57% of African children are enrolled in primary education, and only one in three children complete their schooling? BKF is committed to make a difference in the lives of these children through giving them the opportunity of an education.

By the end of the year 2010 we saw the completion of a 3 classroom school.

Our “New Beginning Academy “opened its doors to the orphaned and poor children in Juja Farm, Kenya on 3^rd Jan 2011!!

Secondary School Bursaries

Throughout the year we have continued to support the Secondary School children with bursaries for their education fees.

In order to continue this good work we are urgently seeking child sponsorship for these children at approx £20 per child per month. at least 20 children which requires at least £20 per month

Hygiene and Sanitation – provision of toilets

We have built toilets in the school premises.

£2500 is urgently required to provide clean drinking water in the school.

Sports and Child Therapy

Playground

Thanks to the generosity of East African Playgrounds we now have playground facilities for the school and the local Juja Farm community. (Photos)

Provision of school uniforms

We continue to supply school uniforms and stationery for our orphaned children and are hoping that some of our supporters may wish to commit to supporting one of these children at the cost of £10 pm for their uniform and daily upkeep. We are trying to get child sponsors for at least 50 children (£10 pm) to provide for uniforms and daily upkeep

Health

Facts

Less than 50% of Africa’s population have access to hospitals or doctors and at least one in six children die before the age of 5.

Breakthrough foundation has devoted part of their resources to provide health education workshops. This is aimed at raising awareness of/and the prevention and transmission of HIV/Aids

We are aiming to build a Medical Centre to provide the medical care that is so greatly needed .

'Colour Me Beautiful' fund raising event.

On 25 March, 20 ladies gathered together for an afternoon of fun and indulgence to help to raise some much needed funds for BKF.

Following a warm welcome and introductions by Esther we had a very enjoyable light hearted presentation from Jenny Hogg. Jenny had a lot to contend with as she somehow brought out the youth in us and with 20 giggly middle aged ladies in tow she did extremely well to get through it and retain her sanity. I am sure we were not the best
behaved group she has ever worked with but she had to admit it was 'Fun'.

The best was yet to come when Liz and her friends proceeded to bring out the delicious treats they had kindly made for us and we got to savour some mouth watering home made cakes which were very moorish. But the real icing on the cake was when it was announced that we had raised £227.50, just from having some fun together.

Mold Street Party, fundraising event

On the day of the Royal Wedding while most sensible people were still in their beds, 7 volunteers set out bright and early to arrange their display boards and stall ready for the start of the Mold fun day. We were extremely grateful for the good weather as many Job's comforters had taken pleasure in telling us "the weather over the w.e. is going
to be cold and wet". So when we arrived in the town we quickly positioned ourselves under a canopy just in case they were right. However, to our delight it turned out to be a lovely sunny day and what we had sought for shelter from the rain became our shade from the sun.

It seemed a long slow day, as most people were either busy watching the wedding on the TV screens that had been provided or enjoying the entertainment and attractions that had been laid on. But once again, we had a very enjoyable time and in addition to raising awareness to the Charity we made £105 from the day, which we were very grateful for.

Glastonbury

On 23 June 10 of our volunteers will be participating in the Glastonbury Festival RECYCLING scheme to raise money for our Charity.

Not only have they each raised the £190 entrance fee, which on completion of their task will be refunded and donated to BKF but they will also be working 6 hrs each day during the festival undertaking their recycling duties!

So we would like to thank them and hope they have a great time at the Festival and look forward to hearing all about it on their return - and don't forget to get lots of pics to add to our gallery.
