"THE WATER RUN" - Ollie Mason
WATER WAY TO RAISE MONEY FOR A LOCAL CHARITY
60 days, 1,000 miles, 20 litres of water and a target of £102,012.....there have been many sponsored walks, but nothing quite like this!
Sir Ian Botham has done it as have so many others.
However, until Ollie Mason came along nobody has ever attempted to walk from John O’Groats to Lands End carrying 20 litres on their head.
Fittingly Ollie, 23, chose to take on this Olympian challenge this year and has been training hard for the last 18 months.
Says Ollie: “The Water Run aims to increase awareness of how millions of impoverished people have to walk huge distances every day simply to collect water – which is often contaminated.”
This incredible journey begins on 4th July and will be completed 60 days later at Lands End on 1st September, averaging over 16 miles each day.
Ollie who lives in Chester plans to raise over £100,000 for charities including the Wrexham based Breakthrough Foundation.
“We are a small charity but with a huge heart, said Chair of Trustees Esther Kamau.” We met Ollie last year when he was working in town and are proud to be sitting alongside other charities like Oxfam as this will undoubtedly also raise our profile.
Clean, safe water is vital to our work at Juma Farm community in Keyna. We help maintain a medical centre and as this area is semi arid with little rainfall we are also assisting with new farming methods and the creation of small businesses.
It’s unbelievable that Ollie is going to be carrying 20 litres of water for 1000 miles. However, that’s his way of highlighting the fact that millions of people around the world have no alternative but to walk huge distances to collect water simply to survive.”
Just £2.00 (less than the price of a coffee in many of the town’s cafes) would provide a vulnerable child with clean, safe water until adulthood.
The Water Run is a part of World Walks for Water & Sanitation and was formally launched at a charity reception in Downing Street on 23 May.
